Background of the Study
Emotional intelligence (EI) is increasingly recognized as a vital component of nursing education, particularly in fostering teamwork and collaboration among students (Goleman, 2023). It encompasses self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills, all of which are essential for effective interpersonal communication and conflict resolution (Salovey & Mayer, 2023). In a profession where teamwork is crucial, nurses with high EI are better equipped to manage stress, communicate effectively, and work harmoniously in healthcare teams (Adeyemi & Musa, 2024).
Teamwork is an integral part of nursing education, as it prepares students to function in multidisciplinary healthcare environments. Effective teamwork enhances patient outcomes, reduces medical errors, and improves workplace morale (Johnson & Usman, 2024). However, challenges such as interpersonal conflicts, poor communication, and stress-related burnout can hinder teamwork among nursing students (Eze et al., 2023). Emotional intelligence serves as a key factor in mitigating these challenges by helping students regulate their emotions and develop strong professional relationships (Chukwu & Bello, 2024).
Despite its significance, emotional intelligence is not always prioritized in nursing curricula in Nigeria, leading to gaps in students' ability to work effectively in teams (Ogunyemi et al., 2024). At the Federal University, Lafia, nursing students engage in collaborative learning and clinical training, but the extent to which EI influences their teamwork abilities remains underexplored. This study seeks to evaluate how emotional intelligence affects teamwork among nursing students and to provide recommendations for incorporating EI training into nursing education.
Statement of the Problem
Effective teamwork is critical in nursing education, yet many nursing students struggle with communication, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation in team settings (Bello & Yusuf, 2024). These challenges often stem from low emotional intelligence, which can lead to interpersonal conflicts, reduced collaboration, and decreased academic performance (Musa et al., 2023). Without adequate emotional intelligence training, nursing students may find it difficult to navigate teamwork dynamics, ultimately affecting their readiness for professional practice (Okonkwo & Adegbite, 2024).
At the Federal University, Lafia, nursing students participate in various team-based learning activities, including group projects, simulations, and clinical rotations. However, there is limited research on how their emotional intelligence levels impact their ability to collaborate effectively. Addressing this gap is crucial to enhancing teamwork skills and preparing nursing students for future healthcare roles. This study aims to assess the influence of emotional intelligence on teamwork among nursing students at Federal University, Lafia, and to explore strategies for improving EI training in nursing education.
